Mosquito Management—A History

IMM, Inc.

A brief history of mosquito control

Mosquitoes have been among the most troublesome pests on the Connecticut shoreline for a long time. By 1900, with the knowledge certain species transmitted disease, this annoyance became a matter of both public and private concern. In 1915, under authority of the CT General Assembly, the CT Agricultural Experiment Station began a program to combat mosquito populations in cooperation with municipal health officers. A State Mosquito Commission, composed of representatives of the Experiment Station, Department of Health, Board of Fisheries and Game, and Water Commission, was assigned this responsibility in 1939. It was transferred to the Section of Mosquito Control within the State Department of Health in 1951, where control remained until the Connecticut General Assembly discontinued funding for mosquito control in 1991.

The Mosquito Control Section concentrated their efforts on the salt marsh mosquitoes along the coastline. Using an integrated program of open marsh water management, tidal gate management, inspection, chemical and biological agents, the CT shoreline enjoyed effective, low-cost mosquito control. That two-year absence allowed relatively unchecked mosquito breeding to flourish. Numerous complaints during the summer of 1994 redefined mosquito control as a priority.

Kurt Ehrhart, President of Innovative Mosquito Management, Inc., has managed mosquito populations in Connecticut for over 10 years as a member of the Department of Health and in private practice.
