Phragmites: Invasive Species Control

Innovative Mosquito Management, Inc. used the Marsh Master II to mulch the invasive phragmities on Nott Island in the Connecticut River in 2004. The machine is completely amphibious and uses a 76” all aluminum cutting deck that is similar to the brush hog type mower.

Many important bird species were observed on the island. In addition to birds, we observed harbor seals fishing from the island banks, beaver dens, coyote, deer and otters. Also on Nott Island, last year, deep sump ponds were excavated by the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The sump ponds are meant to encourage migrating and local populations of birds to use this site.

Our main goal is the removal of this aggressive growing plant, one that devastates the native grasses and other beneficial fauna. Phragmites is very high on the invasive plant hit list.

Innovative Mosquito Management, Inc., is licensed for Aquatic Pest Control in Connecticut. During Autumn, 2003, IMM, Inc. herbacided the invasive phragmities and will continue control efforts throughout 2004.
